Doncaster strengthened their position at the top of division three with a deserved victory in Somerset.

It was the first time in eight games since Gary Johnson arrived to manage Yeovil, that Doncaster had beaten the Glovers.

"I thought we deserved it" said manager David Penney whose team trailed 17 points behind conference champions Yeovil last season.

"We knew we had to stifle their good players in midfield and also Gavin Williams who plays in the whole. We did it well.

"I was determined to freshen things up a bit after dropping points last Saturday so I played Leo Fortune-West up front with Chris Brown. To be fair they didn't do a lot in the second half but things perked up when I brought on Gregg Blundell." Blundell almost scored with his first touch in the 66th minute but Stephen Collis made an excellent save.

The goal that settled the match came on 72 minutes. Midfielder Ricky Ravenhill found some space and beat Collis with an excellent effort from the edge of the box.

Doncaster also had the better chances in the first half but play was scrappy and the main entertainment came from the crowd who baited winger Michael McIndoe who left Yeovil for Doncaster in an acrimonious summer transfer.

Yeovil fans displayed a large "judas" banner and McIndoe was booed every time he touched the ball.

It was not until the closing stages that Yeovil began to look dangerous. They thought they had equalised following a corner when Williams came in late to knock the ball past Andy Warrington, but the goal was disallowed for a push.

Other frantic efforts almost brought a reward but on the night Doncaster looked worthy champions and Yeovil have to now pull out the stops to try to earn a place in the play-offs.
