We'll start by completely ignoring the first half. I know it doesn't look bad on paper, but until Ryan scored his deflected shot we weren't really in it.
The first half should only be remembered purely for the performance of the Grimsby no.4. He was quality. I'd reproduce his name, but I couldn't make out the announcers mumble as he struggled to pronounce it. Suffice to say it was of african origin and he was a trialist. Imagine Leo Fortune West playing at centre half and you've got a pretty good picture of the abilities of this lad who was obviously trying to impress by upending, pushing and hacking anything that moves. The ref, who let most things go, eventually had no choice but to book him. Thirty seconds later and he's crunched another Rovers player and almost gets sent off. A few short, sharp words from Penney to Russell Slade, probably along the lines of "get that idiot off as playing against ten men won't help us or you" and he didn't reappear for the second half. Rumours of him scrapping with another Grimsby trialist, Ipoua (who is just as naff as his rubbish brother) in the tunnel at half time give a whole new meaning to "fighting for a contract"!
The second half was much better. Good crisp, one touch passing, decent movement and a good individual goal from Heffernen whose partnership with Roberts looks promising. McIndoe and Copps looked lively and Green and Ravenhill did well also. McGuire, apart from losing posession a couple of time did well as did the rest of the defence. So here's hoping we start the season with a 2nd half performance and not a 1st half one.
Oh, and I decided tonight I would move from my normal standing place (Main Stand Terrace near the Rosso End) and have another go on the Town End. In a T-Shirt. Not as bad as Southport away, but still very wet.
