What a night, it had everything; a red card, penalties, brilliant goalkeeping and best of all, a Rovers team that worked amazingly hard to shrug of premiership opposition - Manchester City.
The first half was very entertaining with Rovers defending brilliantly and had one of the best chance's of the game when McIndoe received a cross from the right smashing it goal-wards beating David James only to have it cleared off of the line and out for a corner.
The second half was just as entertaining with but this half Man City had the majority of the possession and started off where they finished on Sunday when Sun Jihai shashed an easy shot onto the crossbar.
Rovers held City to a 0-0 draw and then we were into extra-time.
McDaid brought down Dunne in the Rovers box in the first half of extra-time and the Ref gave them a penalty which Vassell blasted into the roof of the Rovers net making it 0-1 to City.
McIndoe was a commanding presence throughout the whole game and when there was an alleged hand-ball in the box in the last couple of minutes of the second half of extra-time, he took the penalty which he slid home comfortably into the left corner of the net sending James the wrong way. The Rovers fans went crazy.
Warrington was injured in the second half and was replaced by substitute Jan Budtz.
When the full-time whistle went, there was a huge roar at Belle Vue because we had managed to drag Man City into a penalty shoot-out.
The first penalty for Rovers was taken by McIndoe who had only just taken on in extra-time. He blasted it into the bottom left corner again sending James the wrong way.
The first penalty for City was to be taken by Vassell, the curse of the cross-bar came into play again as he walloped the ball straight into it from the spot.
The second penalty for the Rovers was to be taken by Coppinger, who hadn’t yet scored a goal for us, powered it into the bottom left making it 2-0 in the shoot-out.
The second for City was to be taken by Sibierski but a brilliant save by Jan Budtz kept Rovers well in front in the shoot-out.
The third for Rovers was taken by Heffernan and he absolutely hammered it as far into the bottom left corner as he could, James went the right way but he had no chance. Rovers were now 3-0 up in the Shoot-out.
The third and final penalty for City was to be taken by Dunne, but an even better save from Budtz tipping it onto the post and winning the game for the Rovers.
All in all an absolute stormer of a game for Donny and a night to treasure as we are put into the draw for the next round of the Carling Cup.
