Northwich Victoria almost derailed Doncaster's title train, but Rovers held on to win 2-1.

The visitors made an express start and threatened to sweep the Cheshire outfit aside.

In the opening exchanges they forced a string of corners and Paul Barnes was especially frustrated as good final passes from Gareth Owen and Justin Jackson somehow escaped him in front of goal.

Just as it looked as if Northwich had weathered the worst, Doncaster struck. There were 25 minutes gone when Jackson cut across the face of a hesitant home defence and he chose not to shoot, but found Andy Watson instead with a measured pass.

Watson easily beat Chris Royle and cut in from the left before despatching the ball into the bottom corner of the net at the far post.

But Rovers could make no further headway before the interval and they were almost caught cold at the start of the second half when Greg Rioch unleashed a 25-yard shot which cannoned off an upright to safety.

The goal lifted Vics although it proved premature.

Their hopes of getting back into the game appeared to be dashed on the hour when a long clearance by Steve Foster was controlled and cleverly played on by Barnes so that Jackson only had to sidefoot the ball home from the centre of goal.

Both sides introduced new signings from the subs' bench Dene Shields, on loan from Sunderland, entered the fray for Doncaster but had nothing like the impact of John Allan for Northwich.

In the 72nd minute a huge clearance by Paul Gibson was misdirected by Foster and Allan swept the ball home from 15 yards.

Foster, within seconds, was denied by Gibson at the other end, but Northwich finished strongly with luck deserting Allan and Gregg Blundell at the vital moment.

Vics manager Jimmy Quinn was not downhearted: "Doncaster are one of three teams capable of winning the title. I was pleased with much in our performance."
