Doncaster staged a barnstorming finish, slamming in three goals in the last 12 minutes thanks to some woeful Hereford defending, to go into the play-offs with hopes high of a return to the Nationwide League.
Their late goals spree allowed millionaire backer John Ryan his moment of glory. The life long Rovers fan, who has ploughed around £5million into the club, replaced Paul Barnes for the last two minutes.
Ryan, five days short of his 53rd birthday, became the oldest player to appear for a senior professional club when he came on in injury time.
"It's the culmination of a lifetime's dream for me" said Ryan. "I always wanted to play for Doncaster, I always wanted to own the club. Now I have done both, my ambition is to get us back into the Football League.
"The town of Doncaster deserves to have a Football League team, as does Hereford. It was very good of the manager to let me go on." With 12 minutes to play, after Albano Correia had restored Hereford's lead, it seemed as if the Bulls were the more likely winners, gaining the three points they were seeking to seal sixth place.
But Rovers showed their resilience and hit back strongly through Tristram Whitman and Barnes and sub Gregg Blundell to take the points.
Hereford had had rather the better of the first half and after Correia and Richard Teesdale had gone close, Danny Williams got the vital goal seven minutes before the break, curling a free-kick over a defensive wall and into the net.
Doncaster pressed hard at the beginning of the second period but eventually were handed their equaliser on a plate by Hereford's Matt Baker.
The goalkeeper completely misjudged Chris Beech's cross and his finger-tip touch landed the ball on the head of Andy Watson, who netted from close range.
