Two second-half goals in three minutes earned Doncaster victory and plunged bottom club Stockport deeper into relegation danger.
County showed plenty of spirit for a side well adrift at the foot of the table and looked the better team at the start.
They enjoyed an early spell on top with Northern Ireland striker Warren Feeney hitting a snap shot fractionally wide from the edge of the box in the fifth minute.
But it was Doncaster who took the lead against the run of play four minutes later.
A brilliant run from skilful winger James Coppinger set up the chance when he ran half the length of the pitch, dribbling past several opponents, before setting up Gregg Blundell who was left with an easy tap in from close range.
Doncaster dominated for the rest of the half but the visitor's goal led a charmed life with Ashley Williams making a series of goalline clearances.
Goalkeeper James Spencer came to the rescue with a string of fine saves starting in the 13th minute when he did well to parry a fierce angled drive from Michael McIndoe.
Coppinger followed up but twice had shots cleared off the line in the ensuing goalmouth scramble.
Stockport's attacks were few and far between in this period although Lee Cartwright volleyed over the top in the 37th minute after Danny Adams had hit a snap shot just wide.
Rovers continued to call the shots and should have stretched their lead before the interval but Ricky Ravenhill had a volley cleared off the line by Ashley Williams and then Cartwright came to the rescue to clear a goal-bound header from Nick Fenton on the stroke of half time.
Stockport came out for the second half in a determined mood and were rewarded when Feeney raced through the middle to round home keeper Andy Warrington before firing home the equaliser in the 50th minute.
But it was all Doncaster after that and after Spencer had made a series of excellent saves he was finally beaten by a cracking 30 yarder from left back Tim Ryan who restored Rovers' lead in the 65th minute.
It was 3-1 two minutes later when Blundell converted another opportunist chance after a superb move involving John Doolan, Ryan and McIndoe.
Doncaster should have had more goals to show for their dominance but McIndoe fired straight at Spencer when he should have scored in the 71st minute and the County keeper denied Blundell his hat-trick with another fine save in injury time.
