Doncaster cracked open the champagne after clinching promotion to the second division with four games to spare.

It has been a remarkable achievement by the unfancied South Yorkshire side who were promoted from the Conference via the play-offs last season.

Rovers were among the favourites to go down at the start of the campaign but have proved the pundits wrong in devastating style.

Even their fans seemed shocked at their feat with their biggest crowd for almost 20 years strangely subdued until the closing stages.

But there could be no dispute that their success is deserved as they stretched their unbeaten run to 14 matches in a remarkably consistent season.

Cambridge came to spoil the party, packing their midfield and playing with Jermaine Easter as a solitary striker.

Adebayo Akinfenwa had visiting keeper Shaun Marshall at full stretch to save a stinging shot in the fifth minute but Rovers rarely threatened to break the deadlock in a scrappy first half.

But they gradually settled to their task with Ricky Ravenhill working particularly hard in midfield while burly striker Akinfenwa was always a threat in attack.

Rovers lifted their game in the second half and Ravenhill hit the crossbar with a well-struck volley following a sustained spell of pressure in which Dave Morley had a shot blocked on the line.

Cambridge were finding it more and more difficult to push out of defence although Easter hit a 25-yarder wide from an angle in the 55th minute.

Akinfenwa was just off the mark with a diving header but made no mistake when he forced home the opener from close range after Greg Blundell had supplied the cross in the 60th minute.

There was no looking back for Rovers after that and the fans went wild with delight when Paul Green added the second with a spectacular diving header in the 65th minute.

Danny Webb headed home for Cambridge in the 70th minute only to have the effort disallowed for offside.

Substitute Chris Brown went close to adding a third for Rovers seconds before the final whistle, but nobody cared when the ball sailed wide as the promotion celebrations had already begun.
