The third division leaders Doncaster hit back to salvage a point for the second home game in a row when substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa grabbed his first league goal five minutes from time.

Rovers looked to be heading for a rare home defeat until Akinfenwa pounced after visiting keeper Michael Christ had parried a shot from Chris Brown straight to his feet.

It was a typical game of two halves dominated by a gale force wind which Doncaster had at their backs during the first period.

The home side forced the pace with the Quakers seldom able to battle their way out of their own half.

But Doncaster failed to take advantage of the conditions with defenders Craig Liddle and Jonathan Hutchinson outstanding for the Quakers at the back.

Ricky Ravenhill set the pattern for Doncaster when he fired over the top in the second minute after the ball had bobbled around the penalty area following a left wing cross from Michael McIndoe.

Dave Mulligan was out of luck in the 19th minute when he directed a cracking 20 yarder on target but Price reacted acrobatically to make a superb save.

Skipper Steve Foster had a header cleared off the line by Liddle a minute later and Leo Fortune-West was denied when substitute Brian Close blocked his shot on the turn.

Right back Mulligan was Doncaster's main threat and he had another 20 yarder tipped round the post in the 40th minute.

But it was Darlington who took the lead early in the second half with their first shot on target.

A quickly taken corner from Craig Russlell caught the home side napping and Mark Convery latched onto the ball to hit a swerving shot inside the far post.

Mark Albrighton had a goalbound effort tipped away by Price in the 65th minute but there was no stopping Akinfenwa when he struck from close range five minutes from time.

Russell had a great chance to pinch all three points from Darlington with the last kick of the match but he fired hurriedly wide after being set up by Daniel Graham deep into injury time.
