Colchester United's terrific start to the season continued when they thumped Doncaster Rovers, thanks to a goal blitz in the first half.

Rovers actually started the better team, but they were left shell shocked as their Essex hosts plundered 3 goals in an 11 minute spell to effectively wrap up this match.

Craig Fagan broke the deadlock in the 16th minute. Defender Steve Foster made a mess of trying to deal with Kevin Watson's losted ball and when it skimmed off his head, there was Fagan to pounce.

The former Birmingham City trainee clipped the ball over advancing keeper Andy Warrington to register his 4th goal of the season.

Colchester made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute with Gavin Johnson rattling up his 3rd goal in as many games.

Striker Ben May headed Joe Keith's cross into the danger zone and Doncaster's defence was all at sea as Johnson powered in to direct his shot under Warrington's body.

5 minutes later and Colchester were 3 up. The impressive Greg Halford started the move and it was him who finished it for his first goal of teh season.

Halford's initial run stretched the Doncaster defence before he spread the ball out to Fagan. His cross wsa headed down by May and Halford, with his back to goal, hooked home in some style.

There was a glimmer of hope for Doncaster when midfielder John Doolan robbed home skipper Wayne Brown and burst through to smash an unstoppable shot passed keeper Aidan Davison.

Rovers tried to get back into it the second half and the Youth's were indebted to some smart saves from Davison, particularly from Leo Fortune-West.

But any hopes of a Doncaster recovery were dashed in the 70th minute when Joe Keith curled a 20 yard free kick over the defensive wall and beyond the reach of keeper Warrington.

It was Keith's 2nd goal of the season following another terrific free kick at Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the season.

Colchester were denied a 5th goal by the woodwork in the 85th minute. Striker May deserved a goal, for his hard work, and he almost grabbed one when his header from Keith's free kick studied off the bar.

But it didn't really matter because Colchester were in cruise control, registering their 5th victory in 6 league games this season.
