Sean O'Driscoll endured a miserable return to Bournemouth where he spent 23 years as player, coach and manager.

The now Doncaster Rovers boss watched as his promotion-chasing team gave away two soft goals a minute either side of half-time.

Doncaster, hampered by injuries and suspensions, have now won two of their last nine matches which is in stark contrast to the improving form shown by the club O'Driscoll left behind.

Bournemouth's victory, their tenth of the season, lifted them out of the relegation places and gives them real hope of avoiding the drop from League One.

Doncaster were bright and lively early on and Mark McCammon should have done better with a header after only five minutes across the face of the goal from six yards following a corner on the left.

Lewis Guy twice went close in the first half and Bournemouth showed signs of struggling until just before the break.

Then David McGoldrick seized on a defensive mistake and ran on to set up a chance for Brett Pitman to score his fifth goal of the season with a rasping right-foot drive.

Before that, Steve Fletcher had twice gone close, but Doncaster could consider themselves unlucky to be a goal behind at the break.

Within two minutes of the restart they were in more trouble again after a bizarre incident starting with Adam Lockwood's clumsy back pass to goalkeeper Neil Sullivan.

Sullivan failed to bring the ball under control on the byline and succeeded only in clearing as far as Marc Wilson 30 yards out.

Wilson headed forward to McGoldrick, who scored with a stunning left-foot volley into the top corner of the net.

Doncaster took command of the last 25 minutes but had little to show for it.

Neil Moss did well to save a bending free-kick from Brian Stock and Graeme Lee shot wide from ten yards when a goal looked certain.

O'Driscoll sent on three substitutes in a bid to break Bournemouth's grip, but his old club had no problems hanging on to a precious win.
