Doncaster Rovers won the third division championship on the strength of their own efforts in netting a hard-earned point from a battling performance at Boston.

The match was generally an entertaining affair with both sides having a clutch of chances. But in the end a share of the spoils was probably a fair reflection on the action.

Doncaster were the first to create a moment of danger when a long range shot from Steve Foster was saved by Paul Bastock.

Almost instantly in reply Boston went close when Danny Thomas cut the ball back and Graeme Jones fired too high on five minutes.

The attack-minded nature of the game continued with first Greg Blundell being denied by Bastock went clean through on the Boston goal and then when Andy Warrington saved well for Rovers on ten minutes from Lee Thompson in similar circumstances.

Boston almost broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Thompson saw a header held by Warrington after Jones' initial shot had been blocked on the Doncaster line by Foster.

In the 35th minute it was Boston who almost broke through but Warrington leapt well to clutch a swerving 25-yard drive from David Noble.

Boston opened the second half in bright fashion and kept Doncaster penned back, but without being able to cause a breakthrough from two early corners.

Doncaster hit back with a swift counter-attack but John Melligan headed well off target from a Michael McIndoe cross.

Then in the 58th minute Blundell burst clear down the right but saw his low cross-shot diverted wide by Ben Chapman.

In terms of clear cut chances, the second period then drifted into a phase where neither side could really impose themselves although there was no shortage of energy and commitment by both sets of players.

Boston forced the pace again in the 75th minute and following two partially cleared corners, Simon Rusk saw an 18 yard shot well held by Warrington.

Rovers were at full stretch to hang on in the 85th minute when home pressure culminated in a shooting chance for Steve Melton.

But his effort was blocked by Mark Albrighton.

The Rovers manager said: "Obviously we are all delighted and it was great that we got the point we needed through our own effort - and especially nice to do it in front of our mass of fans who were different class." Boston boss Steve Evans said: "Doncaster deserve the championship and full marks to them. I thought we had the better chances out there but they are now the benchmark we have to try and match next season."
