Last night (Chesterfield) we saw the true benefit of the players Penney has brought in lately. Blayney had his best game for the club, caught a number of crosses and made some smart stops. Both Graeme Lee and David Wheater were a tower of strength at the back against a decent looking Chesterfield attack. Horlock was again outstanding in midfield, bossing the play, using the ball well and breaking up much of Chesterfields play. Jason Price offers a rare option down the right, pace, strength, height and a goal threat, he was excellent again today and popped up with the goal that mattered.
It wasn't just the new boys though, the Penney old guard also played their parts again. Mullster was solid while Greenie had by far his best game in a long time. He looked more like the Paul Green of old, confident and breaking forward, winning the ball high up the pitch and linking with the attack. It was great to see him pop up in the box to win the penalty which was unfortunately saved. Big Leo was also a battering ram upfront, particularly in the second half where he worked so hard and was central to a lot of our best work both attacking and defending.
Chesterfield looked decent and caused us a lot of problems but we answered it with a resilience that has perhaps been missing at times and by the looks of things has been addressed by Dave Penney. Every player worked hard and put their bodies on the line tonight, they all played their part in an excellent and crucial three points. We can look at the league table with a little more comfort but certainly no complacency and it's no time to take the foot off the gas. The jigsaw looks like it's fitting together nicely and we need to build on these back to back wins over the coming weeks. A marked improvement can be seen and long may it continue.
We all knew we were capable and if we can continue to show this kind of resilience then we have reason for plenty of hope, be it this season or next. Let's hope Kevin Horlock can join the party full time!
