Wednesday v Barnsley-

Last updated : 17 October 2004 By Martin Haythorne
Never turn down a freebie is my motto, so an invite to sit on the press bench at Hillsboro was my Sunday afternoon mission.

In all honesty I expected to came back and say:
A: Chris Marsden is past it
B: Bullen is a nobody
C: Proudlock is over rated
D: Sturrock plays long ball football.

All four points were wrong.

A: Chris Marsden.
Okay he's a rough looking lad with a chin like Gail Tilsley but he was like a machine today. He pulled strings, attacked and passed like he was 21 again. Marsden was the archetypal midfield General today and even a Rovers stalwart like me has to admit he is more than capable at this level.

B: Bullen
Make no mistake this guy is a talented, flexible defender who can mix it and play it.

C:Proudlock
His goal was a pearler of a near post header that he admitted to working on at the training ground with Sturrockrecently. His two disallowed goals? Well one was touch and go but the other one was a certainly acceptable finish.

D:Sturrock
I'd been told several times recently that the label of long ball football is unfair on Sturrock's style and today I saw why. It isn't long ball, its very attacking and quick movement of the ball. A lot of Football is played but at a high tempo creating plenty of chances.

As for Barnsley they were poor. Over physical and somewhat bereft of ideas at times. None of the Barnsley players stood out for me, but that seemed to be because of Wednesday not letting anyone settle on the ball.

As a neutral the game was very entertaining, maybe I caught the point Wednesday turn themselves around who knows? On that show you cannot see them outside the playoff's at the end of the season.
