Shiels, who left Hibernian for Doncaster Rovers in February for around £50,000 says he was delighted to get his first goal for the club in Saturday's 2-0 win over Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace.
The 24-year-old former Arsenal youth-team player said: "It was important for the team to finish their home programme on a high, particularly for the supporters.
"The club are obviously enjoying being in The Championship and they have great ambition.
"We started well and then were perhaps second best when they hit the woodwork three times but after I scored the goal on the stroke of half-time things just got better
"I like playing just behind the strikers in that holding role, but I'm just happy to be in the team and enjoying my football".
A second goal from James Hayter on 75 minutes ensured maximum points for Rovers.
Manager Sean O'Driscoll said: "We had a bit of luck when they kept hitting the post but against that we should have had a penalty and when the chances came we took them." O'Driscoll admitted he was proud of his side for climbing away from the relegation zone without compromising their footballing style.
Rovers moved up to 13th in the Championship table after a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and O'Driscoll believes that they can now establish themselves in the division.
He said: "I think we've shown we can compete in the Championship now.
"The supporters have helped us a lot this season because they have stuck with us when results weren't going our way.
"We were bottom of the table at Christmas and I'm proud of the way we've managed to climb up the table while at the same time sticking to playing football the way we have always done."
