The influential midfielder missed the closing weeks of last season following surgery to clear up a long-standing back problem.

"Stocky is coming along well," said physio John Dickens.

"He has started his running programme - he's been doing some easy jogging - and he hasn't had any adverse reaction.

"We'll gradually build it up and we'll start to get him twisting and turning and kicking the ball.

"He's away on holiday in a couple of weeks and when he comes back he'll train with me for a few days, then he'll join in with full pre-season."

Striker Steve Brooker is also making good progress from the ankle operation he had earlier this year.

"Steve will start doing a little bit of easy running next week and we'll see how he gets on with it," said Dickens.

"We knew that it was going to be a four-month job and it is only just over three months, so we've got a little while to go.

"Steve hasn't had a break yet. He is going to have a week off and then we''ll see what he's like after that.

"The hope is that he'll be fit enough to join in some of the sessions when the players report back next month.

"Hopefully he'll be able to play in some pre-season games and be ready for the start of the season."

Last season's top scorer, Paul Heffernan, is also on track to be fit to join in pre-season training following his cartilage operation.

"Heffs has just started doing some light running this week and he's on target," said Dickens
