The only football game to be scheduled to be played at the stadium during the close season will be director of football Micky Walker's Testimonial match on August 1.

O'Driscoll said: "We can't have it both ways. We can't play games in pre-season and then moan about the state of the pitch. The biggest problem is the standard of care - and I am not having a go at anybody.

"The groundsmen have an awful job if they (Stadium Management Committee] hire the pitch out for this and that. If you are going to do that, you've got to try and maintain it a bit better. You've got to do the refurbishment when it is time. As long as they do that it should be OK, but everyone has to compromise.

"We've decided that we can't have a nice pitch if we play a load of pre-season games.

"Until we knew what Division we were going to be in next season, discussions were put on hold. Our biggest constraint when it comes to our pre-season programme will be finance.

"It would be nice, as Hull City did last year, to do some altitude training. But if, for that to happen, the club have got to lay off three people, then you are not going to be able to do it.

"We are trying to look to see where we can get the best preparation. We've mooted going to Premier Division clubs and playing probably their Under-21 team - but as a training game in the day, rather than a night game, where there is all the expense of hiring the stadium and all this, that and the other.

"It is a little bit different but we are having to look at these sort of things. We'll probably put together our pre-season programme within the next week or so."
