Webster, 22, made his first appearance in the Football League against Sheffield United and his performance drew praise afterwards from manager Sean O'Driscoll.
The former Leeds United youngster also played through the pain barrier after being involved in a controversial off-the-ball incident with Darius Henderson.
O'Driscoll said: "It was a difficult place for Byron to make his debut against a difficult opponent. He suffered a nasty injury to his elbow and was in quite a lot of pain but he didn't want to come off which harbours well for his future."
Webster had drifted into non-league football after being released as a teenager by Leeds and played for York City, Harrogate Town and Whitby Town.
He spent the last two years playing in the Czech Republic before securing a two-year deal with Rovers.
"Byron is not going to be one of those centre-halves who is a header and a kicker," said O'Driscoll. "He is going to end up being a cultured centre-back and he has got vast potential."
Lockwood will be out of action for three months after breaking bones in a foot last week against Swansea City.
With Mark Wilson picking up a calf injury against the Blades and James Coppinger already out with a calf problem, O'Driscoll is relieved that his players have a two-week international break before the next game against Barnsley.
"If we had a game on Tuesday night, we would be struggling to field a team that is capable of getting something in this division," admitted O'Driscoll. "The international break comes at the best time for us."
Rovers have drawn eight of their first 11 league games this season and sit three points clear of the drop zone.
Reflecting on his side's performance, O'Driscoll said: "We have had a lot of draws this season, and some have been disappointing because we felt we should have won, but this was a hard-earned point.
"We did what you want a side to do at Bramall Lane but I was disappointed because I think we can do better with the ball.
"We are not the team - with the players we have lost through injury and the players we have sold - that we were last season. We are in a different phase."
