Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll looking to develop younger talent

Rovers skipper Brian Stock, full-back James O'Connor and striker James Hayter, all learnt their trade under O'Driscoll during his time in charge at Bournemouth. With cash in short supply during most of his time at Dean Court, O'Driscoll had little option but to bring through young talent, both from within the club and outside it. Although Rovers are in a different league financially to the Cherries at that time, their average gates make it difficult for them to compete with better supported Championship clubs. "We are not going to be able to raid the transfer market for big name players so we've got to try and pick out ones that we can develop," said O'Driscoll. One such player is Scottish teenager Jack Wilson, who recently joined the club on a short-term contract after being released from his contract by Hibernian by 'mutual consent.' Said O'Driscoll: "I was at a game watching Celtic Reserves and their manager Tony Mowbray said if you want a good little midfielder have a look at him (Wilson). "So we invited him down and Tony was right - he was a good little footballer. "We felt that had he been one of our youngsters we'd have probably given him a year's contract - so it is just an extension of our own youth policy. "By bringing Jack in it gives us the opportunity to have a look at him and from his point of view getting six months at a Championship club at his age can't be bad. "Whether he plays or doesn't play the experience will be good for him. From a career point of view, I think he's made a sensible decision." Meanwhile, Brian Stock awaits confirmation of the Wales team by manager John Toshack today to see if he gets a start against Russia in Cardiff in tonight's World Cup qualifier.
