Rovers had taken a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute at Selhurst Park before Mills was adjudged to have brought down home striker Shefki Kuqi in the box five minutes later.

Kuqi scored frm the resulting spot-kick to level the scores and Alan Lee scored the winner for the Eagles one minute from the end of normal time.

"We have played well all season but we have given away silly goals," O'Driscoll said after the 2-1 defeat.

"The match did change with the sending off. It allowed them to get back into it and also changed our game plan.

"We tried to defend as best as we could, which we did until their winning goal, but I cannot fault my players for all their effort."
