James Coppinger hoping to bring festive cheer

James Coppinger is hoping to deliver a belated Christmas present for Doncaster Rovers fans in the Boxing Day encounter against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.
"We'd love to give ourselves and the fans another three points," said Coppinger.

Were Rovers to record a fifth successive league win, Coppinger said that it would make the sacrifices players have to make over the festive period worthwhile.

"You try to enjoy Christmas Day but you've just got to be sensible and make sure that you don't eat or drink too much so that you don't feel sluggish the next day," he said.

"It's not a problem for me because I've been playing football that long that I've got used to it. Boxing Day will just be a normal game for me.

He added: "I didn't play there last season but the lads said it was a great place to play so I'm looking forward to it."

The game is the first of the club's return fixtures.

"They came up here early in the season when they were top of the league but I remember thinking after we'd drawn 0-0 that it would be hard for them to maintain it with the squad that they had," said Coppinger.

"It's another away game but we've won our last two and scored five goals without reply.

"The 3-0 win at Crystal Palace was a massive result for us. It was our first away win in the league this season and it took a lot of pressure off us."

With the team finding the net on a regular basis, and having kept a clean sheet in five of their last six games, Coppinger says that Rovers are going into every match in a confident mood.

Coppinger himself will have an extra spring in his step having scored his first league goal of the season at Pride Park on Saturday.

"I always enjoy scoring and in the past my goals seem to have come in bursts, so I might be due another over the two festive games," he said.

Although he admits that he would like to have scored more, he says that there are mitigating circumstances.

"Prior to the Derby game I'd been playing a different sort of role," he said.

"Dean Shiels and John Oster both like to get forward and obviously not everybody can push forward so I've had to drop back at times.

"I'm not the type of player who is selfish and wants to get forward and score goals all the time; I'll do what is best for the team. I think that I've shown that in the last few games."

"It's a new thing for me. But I'm 28 now and in a few years I'll probably be looking to play a more defensive role as against my normal attacking game.

"A lot of players do that – the older you get the further back you go. But I'm not looking that far ahead at this moment in time."
