Doncaster boss Sean O'Driscoll could rest midfield duo v Spurs
It could mean that he leaves either skipper Brian Stock or James Coppinger, or both, out of tonight's tie in order to be certain of them playing against the Bluebirds.
Both players picked up slight ankle injuries in Saturday's defeat at Middlesbrough.
"Both trained yesterday because both of them want to play," said O'Driscoll."They aren't doubtful but we've got to look at the bigger picture.
"The thing that I've got to consider is: if they play tonight will they miss Saturday?
"It is one of those awkward conundrums when we might have to upset the player to do the right thing for the club."
O'Driscoll has midfielder Martin Woods, who missed the trip to the Riverside with a slight calf strain, available again.
Looking ahead to the first meeting of the two clubs in over 30 years, O'Driscoll said: "Harry Redknapp has got some really exciting players at Tottenham.
"They have got a nice balance to the squad and on the brief bits we've seen they look an awesome side.
"I think his squad is as strong as it has ever been. You can have big names on paper but it has all got to gell together and I think looking at it he's probably got the right balance.
O'Driscoll will not need reminding about the threat posed by Defoe, if he features.
O'Driscoll had Defore, then a promising teenager at West Ham United, on a season-long loan during his first campaign in charge at Bournemouth in the 200-01 season during which time he scored 18 goals in 29 appearances, including scoring in each of his first 10 games, equalling John Aldridge's post-war record for scoring in consecutive matches.
"Jermain had all the attributes that you see now," he said. "He had them in abundance at Bournemouth; he's just got a little stronger, a little wiser and a bit more streetwise I suppose.
"He's got a belief that every time he walks out on to the pitch he'll score, and that's what he's doing and he probably does it better than anybody. He is probably the most clinical finisher I've ever seen."
