The 24-year-old striker almost joined Burnley last month but eventually opted to move to the Keepmoat in an initial £650,000 deal.
He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "I went to meet Burnley and agreed terms and everything. My old manager is there and there were a lot of good things about it. But it just didn't feel right and I wasn't prepared to put pen to paper.
"Everyone says they are a big club, but they weren't a big club even when they were in the Premiership.
"I'd been in a week for pre-season training (at Sheffield United) and it got said in the press that I wanted to stay there. But I wanted to go to a place where I was wanted.
"Then Doncaster came in and I felt it was right. Once things were agreed with me and Doncaster, it was a case of the two clubs agreeing things.
"It was a massive help that I did well at Donny and I enjoyed it. I thought 'why can't I go back there and just do that little bit better'.
