Ritchie Wellens says he would like the chance to test himself in the top flight at some stage of his career.

Speaking to The Donny Star influential midfielder Ritchie Wellens says he hopes to play at the top level one day ahead of his return to Bloomfield Road.

The 28-year-old spent five years playing for the Seasiders after starting his career as a trainee at Old Trafford.

Rovers are hoping the fact that Wellens, who has been in outstanding form all season, will be playing for them tomorrow will help tip the balance in their favour.

Wellens' form means that he is now on the radar of bigger clubs.

Like any player, Wellens would like the chance to test himself in the top flight at some stage of his career.

His performances in the two FA Cup games against Aston Villa would suggest that the former England Under-18 international, who played alongside the likes of Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard, wouldn't look out of place in the Premier League.

"You've just got to keep on playing well in the Championship and if someone comes in for you then you take it from there," he said.

"First and foremost, I'm trying to establish myself in the Championship.

"I'm part of one of the best midfields in the Championship and I'm enjoying turning up every week to play against teams who want to play.

"In League One, there were a lot of teams who wanted to stop me playing.

"But in this league you've got big-name players and they just want to go out and concentrate on their own game, which kind of leaves me alone to do what I want to do.

"I don't think that we've come up against a midfield this season who we've thought were better than us."
